Vikas Patel, MD left his high school as Valedictorian. He completed his undergraduate with honors cum laude at the University of Texas at Austin with a BS in Biomedical Engineering. He moved on to attend The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston with the Junior Puccetti Scholarship and the Ann Buckingham Gretzinger, RN and Thomas Gretzinger, MD Scholarship. During his four years at this acclaimed University, he also volunteered at the St. Vincent’s House Free Health Clinic. Even while excelling in many extracurricular activities, he graduated in the top quartile of his class as a Doctor of Medicine. Louisiana State University Health Science Center--New Orleans provided the home for his orthopaedic surgery residency. He went on to the esteemed Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, CA to complete a fellowship specializing in shoulder and elbow reconstruction under the reputable John Itamura, MD.
Dr. Patel is currently a fellow member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Medical Association, and Texas Medical Association. He is a previous member of the Louisiana Orthopaedic Association and is licensed to practice medicine in Texas and California. Dr. Patel has been published in both the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery International. He has several research projects and presentations to his name regarding relevant upper extremity subjects. He has many research projects currently in the works including one study waiting to be published and five manuscripts in progress.
Dr. Patel specializes in shoulder and elbow issues, with expertise in wrist and hand surgery. He treats both operative and non-operative conditions including shoulder and elbow arthritis, rotator cuff tears, labral tears, upper extremity fractures, carpal tunnel, hand and wrist arthritis, and trigger finger. He specializes in both anatomic and reverse shoulder replacements, arthroscopic shoulder surgery, minimally invasive shoulder replacement, elbow replacements, carpal tunnel surgery, and complex revision shoulder and elbow replacements.
Dr. Patel’s family consists of his wife and one child. He enjoys traveling the globe and capturing the moment. When he is not working, he loves all outdoor activities including, hiking, football, golf, basketball, and cooking.
